Myofascial Release Massage St. Pete | Myofascial Release Massage, St. Petersurg, FL
First of all, what is the fascia? Fascia is connective tissue, found surrounding muscles and throughout the body. Fascia, as defined by Wikipedia:
A fascia (/ˈfæʃ(i)ə/; plural fasciae /ˈfæʃii/; adjective fascial; from Latin: “band”) is a band or sheet of connective tissue, primarily collagen, beneath the skin that attaches, stabilizes, encloses, and separates muscles and other internal organs.[1] Fasciae are similar to ligaments and tendons as they have collagen as their major component. They differ in their location and function: ligaments join one bone to another bone, tendons join muscle to bone, and fasciae surround muscles and other structures.
What is a Myofascial Release Massage?
Myofascial release massage is a massage which focuses on the fascia to work out restrictions that may be causing pain or restricting movement. Unlike a standard therapeutic massage where the overall goal is relaxation, this type of massage tends to use slower, sustained pressure, and specific myofascial release techniques to help restore motion and flexibility. The licensed massage therapist will palpate to find areas restriction (knots) in the fascia, then use long, slow, sustained pressure to glide along the fascia, stretching the connective tissue and releasing tension.
I typically combine myofascial release with other massage therapy techniques to provide an overall therapeutic massage that is customized to meet the needs of your body and to help you find relief and relax. For instance, I may use traditional Swedish or deep tissue massage techniques and stretching to enhance your service.
Benefits of a Myofascial Release Massage
If you have painful knots of tension and restricted range of motion, you may find some benefit in a myofascial release massage. A regular series of massages will be helpful in increasing blood flow, improving range of motion, reducing tension and pain, and enabling you to reduce your stress. Improved posture and flexibility may also be additional benefits from regular massage therapy sessions.
